As of January 1, 2025, the minimum immigration salary thresholds for foreign employees in Wallonia have increased. These changes affect new and pending work permit applications as well as already granted permits. In this blog, we explain what this change means for employers and employees and how you can prepare.

What are the new salary thresholds?

Various types of work permits and combined permits in Belgium require employees to earn a minimum salary to qualify. These thresholds are regularly reviewed, and as of January 1, 2025, the following amounts apply:

  • Highly skilled workers: € 51,613
  • Highly skilled workers under 30 years old (junior): € 41,290 (80% of the standard threshold)
  • European Blue Card: € 66,738
  • EU Blue Card for workers with less than 3 years of experience (junior): € 53,390 (80% of the standard threshold)
  • ICT managers: € 66,738
  • ICT experts: € 53,390

What does this mean for employers?

The increase in salary thresholds impacts three specific situations:

  1. Holders of valid permits: If you employ foreign workers with an existing work permit, you must ensure their salary complies with the new thresholds as of January 1, 2025. This prevents potential issues with the validity of their permits.
  2. New and renewal applications: Employers applying for or renewing work permits from 2025 onwards must ensure the employee’s salary meets the new threshold. Applications that do not meet this requirement will be rejected.
  3. Pending applications: For work permit applications with a planned start date after January 1, 2025, employers must increase the salary to comply with the new rules.

Action points for employers

To avoid complications and stay in compliance with regulations, employers should take the following steps:

  • Salary review: Check the salaries of all your foreign employees under one of the above-mentioned schemes and adjust them if necessary.
  • Planning for new applications: Account for the higher salary thresholds in future work permit applications.
  • Communication: Inform your HR department and management about these changes so that everyone is well-prepared.

In conclusion

The increase in immigration salary thresholds in Wallonia since January 1, 2025, is a significant change that employers cannot ignore. Ensure that the salaries of your current and future employees meet the new requirements to avoid any issues. Do you have questions or need assistance?
